About

Silicon Valley native Esther Yei Shih decided to join the ranks of the 'high-tech escapees' after having her first child. "I came home one day and he was singing a nursery song that I never had the chance to teach him. It broke my heart!" she said. So she set out to create a better balance between her family and professional life.

Esther always had a great appreciation for her Asian heritage. It was her love for the exotic beauty of Asian Silks and its extraordinary history that eventually inspired her to begin her venture. After discovering that it was almost impossible to find the masterful workmanship of Asian goods outside of Asia, she decided that the opportunity to fill that void was irresistible! She set out to bring over only the finest examples of centuries old Asian quality and craftsmanship but quickly realized that she would have to create her own line to suit the U.S. market and her exacting standards. Hence, the launch of Far East Living, her collection of distinct contemporary clothing that captures the essence of timeless Asian style. Her pieces are made with only the most opulent materials such as fine silks and cashmere. She enjoys playing with bold contrasts in colors and textures and features intricate details, luxurious and very exotic accents including mink and Mongolian lambswool and hand embroidered embellishments.

An American-born-Chinese raised by a single mother, Esther has tremendous compassion for those in need. She serves on the board of the Downtown Streets Team and on the Development Committee for the Ravenswood Family Health Center, two very important non-profits serving the community and is a founding member of the Palo Alto Downtown Boutiques' Association and producer of IN STYLE Palo Alto. She has also donated to numerous local non-profit organizations including Legacy Through Giving, Self Help for the Elderly, International School of the Peninsula and Yew Chung International School in terms of both her time and her products and is an advocate for bilingual education, community health services and programs for the homeless.

Today, her creations are proudly owned by corporate executives, best selling authors, Emmy Award winning television news journalists, iconic Hollywood legends stylish moms and the most adorable children and babies around the world! Her pieces have been showcased on "
The View From the Bay" which airs weekdays on ABC and worn to countless elegant weddings, red-carpet events including the Grammy's and MTV's Video Music Awards. Her impressive and growing clientele include Oscar nominated actress Michelle Pfeiffer, Emmy Award winning writer/producer David E. Kelley, award winning TODAY Show Co-Host & NBC National Correspondent Natalie Morales, Emmy Award winning news anchors Julie Haener (KTVU FOX 2), Kristen Sze (KGO ABC 7) and Lisa Kim (KNTV NBC 11), Emmy Award Award winning former ABC News producer Della Lowe, celebrated author and former Rolling Stone Magazine Sr. Editor Ben Fong-Torres, and author Marci Shimoff (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul and Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul). She has also made items for many other notable celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Ellen Degeneres, Eva Longoria and Angelina Jolie. Her loyal clientele return often to share the rave reviews and compliments they are always showered with whenever wearing her pieces. She now has 2 children and has successfully managed to strategically arrange her schedule around their activities. Her baby daughter accompanies her in the boutique regularly and enjoys greeting her guests. "The creation of Far East Living has not only enabled me to find myself, but has also defined how I will raise my own children, rich in the culture and traditions of their Asian roots."
